Using Data Replicator II

Select server

Before making data backups or restorations, you should follow the steps to select a target server:

  1. If you use Synology Data Replicator II for the first time, it will search for available server, if not, click <Browse>.
  2. Select the target server
  3. Click <Next>
  4. Input the username and password oo the target server, or choose "guest" to login.
  5. Click <Next>
  6. Select the target shared folder
  7. Click <Finish>

Note: For Windows 98 users, the PC login name and password should be the same with the entered data in step 4.


Backup

Synology Data Replicator II provides 3 backup options:

Immediate Backup

This function allows you to backup all files in the selected folders to the server. We suggest that you use this option for any new backup task. Follow the steps to proceed:

  1. Click <Backup> at the left
  2. Select the folders you want to backup
  3. Click <Immediate Backup>
  4. Click <Done> when the backup is finished

Synchronization

Use this function to monitor the selected folders; any changes made to the files in the selected folder will be backed up to the target server. Follow the steps to proceed:

Start Synchronization

  1. Click <Backup> at the left
  2. Select the folders you want to backup
  3. Click <Synchronization>. You can now click "X" in the right-top corner of the program to minimize it to the system tray.

Stop Synchronization

  1. If the program is minimized to the system tray, double-click the program icon to open it.
  2. Click <Backup> at the left
  3. Click <Stop Synchronization>

Schedule Backup

Use this function to backup all files in the selected folders at the specified time. Follow the steps to proceed:

Set Schedule

  1. Click <Backup> at the left
  2. Select the folders you want to backup
  3. Click <Schedule Backup>
  4. Set the backup schedule
  5. Click <OK>

Delete Schedule

  1. Click <Backup> at the left
  2. Click <Delete Schedule>

Backup Outlook/Outlook Express Files

Use this function to backup your Outlook or Outlook Express files, including mail and address book.

  1. Click <Backup> at the left
  2. Check the "Outlook and Outlook Express Files" option
  3. Click <Immediate Backup>

Your files will be saved in the sub-folder in the following path on the server:

DR2-PC_name-PC_account\backup_time\drive_name


Restore

Synology Data Replicator II provides 2 restore options:

Restore by Browsing

If you are sure of the location of the files you want to restore, you can use this option. Follow the steps to proceed:

  1. Click <Restore> at the left
  2. Click <Start> under the "Restore by Browsing" item
  3. Click <Next>
  4. Choose the data source you want to restore
  5. Click <Next>
  6. Choose if you want to browse the files by version or by restore point
  7. Select the files and folders you want to restore
  8. Click <Next>
  9. Specify the target path
  10. Click <Finish>

Restore by Searching

If you are not sure of the location of the files you want to restore, or you only want to restore files with certain keyword, you can use this option. Follow the steps to proceed:

  1. Click <Restore> at the left
  2. Click <Start> under the "Restore by Searching" item
  3. Click <Next>
  4. Choose the data source you want to restore
  5. Click <Next>
  6. Type the keyword you want to search in the "Keyword:" text field
  7. Choose the backup time from the "Backups:" drop-down menu
  8. Click <Search>
  9. Select the files and folders you want to restore in the right
  10. Click <Next>
  11. Specify the target path
  12. Click <Finish>

Restore Outlook/Outlook Express Files

When you restore Outlook and Outlook Express files, you can choose to restore to the Original path or to the New path:

  1. Original path: by choosing this option, you don't need to manually import mail and address book, PC data will be replaced by the restored files.
  2. New path: by choosing this option, you can restore the data to a specified path, and manually import mail and address book with Outlook and Outlook Express.

Option

Filter

Use this function to exclude files with certain prefix or extension from the backup list. Follow the steps to proceed:

  1. Click <Option> at the left
  2. Click <Filter>
  3. Click <Add> in the right of the "Extension" or "Prefix" option
  4. Enter specified criterion, for example, ".exe" for extension or "~" for prefix.
  5. Click <OK> to close the setup dialogue
  6. Click <OK> to finish

Version

Use this function to define the maximum number of file versions. New file version will be saved in the server upon file changes after the previous backup. Follow the steps to proceed:

  1. Click <Option> at the left
  2. Set the version number
  3. Click <Apply>

Note: Version only applies to Synchronization backup.

Restore point

Use this function to define the number of file restore points that should be saved in the server. The data backed up using "Immediate Backup" or "Schedule Backup" will be granted a restore point at the backup time for future restoration use. In the future you can restore files at the status of the specified restore point. Follow the steps to proceed:

  1. Click <Option> at the left
  2. Set the restore point number
  3. Click <Apply>

Note: Restore point function only applies for users after Windows 98.


Log

The maximum log file is 512KB; when the log file reaches the limit, the oldest 128KB will be removed.

Save Log

  1. Click <Log> at the left
  2. Click <Save>
  3. Choose the target path
  4. Click <Save> to finish

Clear Log

  1. Click <Log> at the left
  2. Click <Clear>
  3. Click <Yes> on the confirmation dialogue
